Thor

You may have heard this story already, but please bear with me as I have more to share.  Several months ago I received a phone call from a neighbor – he had found a stray dog and wanted me to scan it for a chip.  We were both surprised to find the dog did have a microchip.  The dog’s name is Thor, and through his microchip we were able to find that he was nine years old, and his owner had recently passed away.  We learned through family members that Thor had been very much loved, and had been well cared for.  He had problems with ear infections his entire life, and had already undergone double-ear surgery to try to correct the problem.  That surgery, known as a bi-lateral ear resection, did not resolve the problem.  The family asked us to find Thor a new home, so Thor became an All Paws Rescue dog, and he came to my house as a foster.  Since then, Thor has received several different ear treatments including being sedated and having his ears packed with a high-powered anti-bacterial drug – twice.  When even this did not help, and the ear cytology still showed bacteria in the ears, the vet recommended a procedure known as a Tecabo – a Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy.  This surgery has to be done by a specialist, and it is very expensive and can result in a significant loss of hearing.  I immediately wondered - is it worth it for a nine-year-old dog to put him through this painful surgery?  And where would All Paws get the money?

So I spoke with another vet and asked her opinion.  She knows the issues that rescues face with trying to pay for medical care and the challenges of adopting out a senior dog.  I was hoping she’d say that we could just put him on some sort of pain medication instead of doing the surgery.  I know he’s in pain from the way he shakes his head and rubs his ears, and I don’t want him to continue to be in pain, but I was really hoping for another option.  Unfortunately, the vet told me that this surgery was really his only option if we didn’t want to euthanize him.  So although I was sorry to hear there was no easy fix, it made the decision easy.  Even though Thor is a senior dog, he’s still an active, loving dog who has a lot of life left to live.  We had to do the surgery.  So now it’s just a matter of raising the funds.  The neighbor who found Thor is going to help by placing some donation boxes in the community, and I’ve created some on-line fundraising tools to help raise the money.  I may attempt to organize some other event such as a bake sale (don’t worry, I will NOT be the one baking!) or something similar to raise funds.  I may also give in and put some ads on this blog (in a very unobtrusive way hopefully!) in an effort to raise money for Thor’s surgery.  It won’t help much, but every dollar counts!  So if anyone has any interest in helping to raise funds for Thor’s surgery, please let me know.   You can help by sharing this link  on your Facebook page or blog, or by putting a donation jar at a local business, or by helping me organize a larger fundraising event.  Hopefully soon Thor will be ready for surgery and be pain free!

New Header

Huge thank you to Jamie, an awesome artist and pit bull owner, and AJ, owner of the PupLove blog, for my new blog header.  I feel almost like a real blogger now.  Next thing you know I'm going to start putting up advertisements and attending blogging conferences.  Well, maybe not.  But at least the header now looks professional, thanks to Jamie and AJ!  Here's the picture that Jamie drew, and then AJ created the header from this:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today I am grateful for my family, my friends, my country, and my pets.

I'm grateful for the couple who took in Gretchen as a foster dog when she was out of time and had no other chance to be saved.  I'm also grateful to the rest of the rescue volunteers who save all the dogs and cats just like Gretchen when they have nowhere else to go.

I'm grateful for the family who adopted Gretchen, and I'm grateful for all of the other people who adopt dogs and cats - especially those who adopt the ones that are older, disabled, shy, difficult, or otherwise hard to place into permanent homes.

I am grateful for those of you who share your life with me through your blogs.  I'm grateful for each reader that takes time to read my blog and share in my life as well.
I'm especially grateful that you don't turn me into the ASPCA when I post pictures like the one above.

I'm grateful for my cat Merlin, who was yesterday's DogTipper Cat Of the Day!  I'm very proud of him.  Regardless of the fact that he did nothing to earn this honor, and regardless of the fact that they have so few submissions of cats right now that I believe anyone who submits their cat will quickly see their cat become Cat of the Day as well.  I'll pretend he would have won in spite of the competition from thousands hundreds dozens of other cats.

From Remi, me and Noelle - Happy Thanksgiving!

Puppy News

Before I talk about my puppies, I wanted to let you know of another foster blog that I recently discovered.
From Shelter 2 Home is the blog of a teenage foster volunteer for Jacksonville Humane Society.  She currently is fostering three adorable puppies, and is doing a great job helping to save lives.  Please stop by and thank her for the work she is doing!

Poky
Now on to news of my puppies.  Panda Bear and Poky are part of a litter of six pups. They came from southern Oklahoma, but I am working hard to turn them into proper Missouri dogs. The puppies were born and lived under an empty beach house. When the puppies were rescued they were covered with fleas and had many spots of missing hair due to the flea bites. Their rescuer got them needed medical care and then brought them to us so we could help them find homes. They should be ready to be spayed/neutered in a few weeks and then will be ready for adoption. Since there were six puppies, we found two other rescue volunteers who agreed to each take two puppies as fosters. As young as they are, it's not good for the puppies to be alone, so by keeping them with at least one sibling in foster care they can still learn proper dog behavior from each other. I'll share some updates/pictures on the other puppies soon. In fact, I should warn you now that you will probably see nothing except puppy pictures and puppy stories on my blog for the foreseeable future. I apologize in advance. If you get tired of puppies, please return in a few weeks when I will maybe have taken a picture of something or someone other than another puppy. Maybe.

Panda Bear
I took these pictures when I took them to my mom's house to meet my neices and nephew. It is very important for young puppies between 6 and 16 weeks of age to meet as many new and different people and situations as they can. This is true, but it is also a good excuse to take the puppies places to show them off. By the way, I didn't tell my husband I was bringing these puppies home. I waited until he noticed them and asked me about them. Then I said "what puppies? I don't know what you're talking about." But he didn't believe me. So I changed tactics and said "they aren't puppies, they are guinea pigs." They are about the same size as guinea pigs, so I thought it was worth a try. He didn't fall for that either. But incidentally, my three year old nephew did, and when his parents said something about the puppy he was holding, he informed them that it wasn't a puppy, it was a guinea pig! Or maybe he was trying the same trick in hopes that his parents would let him keep a guinea pig.

And now I'd like to share with you a brief compilation of playful Poky puppy pictures.

Baby Kittens

This is Lucy.  She is one of my favorite dogs.
Yes, I know I have at least two dozen "favorite" dogs.  But Lucy is definitely one of them.

I know the title of this post is Baby Kittens, and we'll get to that. But as a dog blogger, I felt obligated to start out with a picture of a dog. Lucy belongs to a friend of mine who fosters cats. Basically Lucy's mom Barb runs a kitten nursery for homeless kittens/cats. And she recently started a new blog. So I talked her into inviting me over to visit. I told her I could write a blog post about her kittens and let people know about her new blog, but first she had to make me dinner and let me play with the kittens - and she believed me! I'm not above using my blog for personal gain. And Barb is a great cook, and a super nice person. So after a wonderful dinner, I got to visit Lucy and Barb's many foster kittens.

Not only does Barb have one litter of one week old kittens and another litter of four week old kittens, she also has a few older kittens/cats that she is fostering until they can find homes. She is amazing - most if not all of these cats/kittens would have been killed if she hadn't taken them in. Now they will get to grow up in a safe, happy place and when they're old enough they'll be spayed/nuetered and available for adoption. Also the momma cats will be spayed and placed for adoption as well. When you get a chance, please stop by Barb's new blog "Barb's Cats and Quilts" and thank her for the work she is doing to save these kittens and cats. And don't forget to tell Lucy hi too!
