Ziggy Prepares for Boot Camp

I can't even put into words how much you all mean to me. So many kind words, and thoughts and prayers and such compassion. And donations as well, to help pay for Ziggy's rehab - I am amazed at your generosity and thoughtfulness. This has been incredibly difficult for me, and there have been times I consider not fostering anymore, or not blogging anymore. The last thing I want is to make people afraid of fostering, or to make people afraid of pit bulls. But seeing that my blog helped someone want to rescue deaf dogs and pit bulls - what greater compliment is there? I have always made this blog about my experiences, both good and bad, of fostering. It's not a blog to get my foster pets adopted, because otherwise I couldn't post pictures like this:
Anyone want to adopt a dog who gets his head stuck in a ball?  Anyone?

And it's not a blog to recruit foster homes, because otherwise I couldn't share pictures like this:
Nope, no dogs in this house.  I just randomly throw stuffing around...for decoration.
I hope that my love of fostering shows through, even when I talk about the hard parts of rescue. And I thank you guys for sticking by me even when I have to share really sad news. I still have hopes of a happy ending for Ziggy, and this blog will no doubt continue to reflect those hopes in continued Ziggy stories. We're still waiting on a date for him to be admitted to the rehab facility, but it may not be for a month or two. So in the meantime, I'll continue to prepare Ziggy for boot camp, and hope for the best. Thank you, so much, for your understanding, and please know that as I joke about Ziggy going to boot camp, I do so because Ziggy taught me to find humor and joy in every part of life, wherever possible.  What better lesson could he teach?

Okay, what's this Boot Camp thing?

You want me to WHAT?!

Okay, if there is food involved, I'm in!

Featured Blogs

To Other Blog Owners:

I have always enjoyed reading blogs on my lunch hour, but several months ago a new security feature at work caused my work computer to block all blogs - even before and after work hours!  I can still read them through Google Reader currently, but I'm unable to leave comments.  This makes me sad since those of you with blogs deserve to know how much I enjoy your blogs.  So I found myself left with a few options.  First is to read the blogs from my home computer where I can leave comments.  This doesn't work well since I am usually too busy chasing after Ziggy doing foster-related tasks at home.  Second was to find another way to let you know how much I enjoy your blogs.  So I developed a Featured Blog listing.  I will pick five blogs each month to feature on my blog.  I will do one post each month to share why I chose those blogs, and then the links to the blogs with the most recent post information will stay at the top of my blog all month long. Featured blog owners will also receive a badge showing they've been selected as a Featured Blog.  I hope those of you with blogs will forgive me for not commenting more often!  Please check out these featured blogs for the month of January, listed here in alphabetical order:

Daily Dose of Jack - Jack and his person (Tall Guy) always make me smile.  They are very funny - a perfect pick-me-up for a work day!

Frankly Speaking - Frankie, the Mayor of Blogville, is one of the nicest doggies I've met.  He put on his Christmas list to Santa that he wanted Santa to find Ziggy a real forever home.  I don't even think 87 gazillion thank yous could really show how much I appreciate that!

Mayzie's Dog Blog - Mayzie's blog is always the first blog I read.  She is a Most Wonderful dog and has the best, most positive attitude anywhere!  I'm considering painting Ziggy with brindle stripes and trying to sneak over to Mayzie's house and trade doggies.  Do you think anyone would notice?

Stumpy's Daily Dose o' Dirtville - Stumpy's blog is one of the most recent blogs I've started reading.  Stumpy has a pretty amazing life in Dirtville, quite different from my life in the suburbs.  I love reading about Stumpy's life.

Tucker - When I first started blogging, I deliberately went looking for a blog about a Harlequin Great Dane like Remi.  Then I found Tucker and I've been a big fan ever since.  Tucker and Remi are a lot alike, and I think if Remi got his own blog it would look like Tucker's blog.  Except Remi complains a lot more than Tucker does.  So maybe it's good that I just stick with reading Tucker's blog instead.

Stay tuned next month for more featured blogs!

How to be a Successful Blogger

This is a guest post by Ziggy The Great The Dog.  I'm here to share a few secrets on how to have a successful blog.  First and foremost, have a mom or dad that will take the time to share all of your stories online.  This is crucial, because there are a lot of other dogs and cats out there that have very interesting lives, but no way to share them with the rest of the world because their mom or dad won't take the time to write or take pictures.  If your mom or dad does not blog about you, consider finding a new mom or dad.  Oh wait, mom said that wasn't nice.  Instead, consider asking them repeatedly until they give in and create a blog about you.  Sad puppy dog eyes also work sometimes.

Once your mom or dad has started a blog, it's important to give them a lot of writing material.  Otherwise you may find that they don't write very often, or even worse, they write about other things instead of you!  To make things interesting, you should try something new at least once a week.  Here are a few suggestions:

a) Develop new hobbies, like drinking or dancing.

b)  Try new foods.  A few of my favorites are bananas and bird seed

c) Get your mom or dad to take you interesting places, and don't let them forget their camera!

d) If all else fails, become creatively destructive

Then, remind your mom or dad to write about you by looking pointedly at the computer.

If this doesn't work, grab the mouse and run around until someone catches you and takes it back.

If all else fails, you may have to take extreme measures.
A few holes in the computer case should convince your mom or dad that everyone will be happier if they will just sit down and start typing.

Remember, the more interesting things you can come up with to do, the more successful your blog will become, so don't be afraid to experiment!

GABE

A few weeks ago Twinkie Maria Conchita Espenoza Cucaracha Doodle-Bug Chupa Cabra Twinkerson organized the first annual Global Animal Blogging Event. The event was a lot of fun, and had animal bloggers participating from all over the world. I made many new friends by visiting all the bloggers participating in GABE. First was Twinkie of course, a four pound teacup Chihuahua who is funny and smart. I also found Bella the Westie, who wears a different adorable outfit every day. There is Sugar the Golden Retriever, Boomer the Ridgeback with a nubbin' tail, Booker Man who is one of Mayzie's two boyfriends, and many others. And then there is Puddles. I'm not sure how I lived before GABE without reading the we 3 doxies blog every day. Puddles always brightens my day. You can find the full list of participants here.

Recently (okay not so recently - I'm behind as usual) I learned that I won a GABE giveaway on Sugar's blog! The package arrived in the mail, and Noelle and Ziggy helped me open it.

Okay, to be accurate, Noelle tried to help me open it while Ziggy tried to chew on Noelle. What else would you expect?

We opened it to find a very cute flower power collar, along with a picture of Sugar!

The collar is going to a very special dog that will be introduced soon!

The Secret Of My Survival

I thought about titling this post "The Secret of My Success".  But honestly I don't think you can really call anything about my life a success.  Except for the foster pets that get adopted.  They are each a success story.  So I decided to go with the more accurate title of "The Secret Of My Survival".

Sometimes people ask me how I manage to work 40 hours a week, care for my own pets, volunteer at adoption events each weekend, foster multiple dogs and cats, and still have time to write blog posts.  It sounds like a lot, but I have a few secrets that I will now share with you.

The majority of the credit goes to one person - my husband.  If Dave had his way, I would only foster one dog at a time, and no cats.  When we first discussed fostering, he had no idea what he was signing up for.  But he makes the best of it.  He shares equally in the responsibility for the dogs (the cats' care is all up to me - he draws the line there!)  We usually work different shifts, so he has the dogs most of the afternoon and early evening while I'm at work.  He spends time with them, makes sure they get dinner, and even plays and wrestles with them. He's the one that helped Ziggy invent the Ziggy Dance!  (Side note: The Ziggy Dance is catching on in Las Vegas now!) I would not feel good about fostering so many dogs if he wasn't around, since many nights after work I'm either running to the vet's office or doing a home visit for a foster pet or attending a fundraising meeting or bribing someone to cook for me.  With Dave there, I don't have to worry about leaving the dogs alone all day while I'm gone.
Speaking of cooking - I don't.  Neither does my husband.  We also don't go out to dinner at a restaurant very often (maybe once a month).  You might be surprised how much time you can free up if you don't cook or go out to eat!  Fortunately Dave and I work different shifts, and when his daughter Rachael isn't here, we pretty much fend for ourselves for dinner since we eat at different times.  So last night for me that meant a Pepsi and two pieces of buttered bread for dinner.  Hey, I heated them in the microwave first - yum!  Oh, and I had a chocolate chip cookie for dessert.  Maybe two cookies - I can't remember.  Anyway, my eating habits aren't the best, but on the plus side it does leave me more time to take the dogs for walks or clean the cat litterboxes.  Besides, no one ever said cereal for dinner was a bad thing.  Did they?

Work.  It pays the bills.  And I'm fortunate to have a job and a boss that are very flexible.  First, they let me fill up my cubicle with pictures of foster pets (the pictures seen here are foster dogs I had last year, photos credit: krazykatlady).  Second my wonderful boss (I'd say that even if she didn't occasionally read my blog!) lets me change my hours and come in late on days that one of my fosters is sick - or has an accident in the house - or finds some other way to make me late for work which happens on a regular basis.  I am very grateful for the flexibility since fostering presents many unforseen circumstances in life!

So every evening I try to fit in some time for playing with the dogs, petting the cats, doling out medication to anyone who needs it, scooping litter boxes, cleaning the house, taking pictures, and playing Farmville.  Sometimes I even take the dogs for walks if time allows.  As long as it doesn't cut into my Farmville time.  Hey, just being honest here.  And in the spirit of honesty, I'll tell you about my blog posts.  I cheat.  Since the majority of my free time is on weekends, I write most of them on the weekend and schedule them to automatically post each day during the following week. I also don't bother actually planning what I'm going to say.  I pretty much just look at the pictures I've taken during the previous week, type whatever I'm thinking about, and that's what you get to read.  Most of the time no planning or editing or improving actually takes place (as you may have noticed).  So I hope you'll forgive me for that.  As you can tell from reading my posts, it's not so much about success around here as it is about survival - and  hanging in there until each foster pet gets his or her own success story.

Coming soon - Barney Rubble (the cat as old as the cartoon character) and one or two new foster dogs!

Tags and Awards

I used to have approximately four readers of my blog.  They were faithful readers.  They came back week after week to read all about each foster pet I brought home.  They were with me during Noelle's puppy days, when Noelle was lazy instead of naughty.  They were even with me when I first started fostering cats.  They faithfully read my posts for the first two years of blogging, and that kept me going, and kept me writing this blog.

Then a few months ago, another pet blogger discovered this blog.  And suddenly I was meeting people all over the world, instead of just the few people I knew in this small corner of the Internet.  And for the first time I discovered other blogs, and these fun blog games and awards.  So today I'm going to share some recent awards and tags that I've received from some new blogging friends.

I received the Sunshine Award from One Pibble's Wish.  The Sunshine Award is given to a blogger who brings a little sunshine into someone's life. Thank you Pibble!  Here are the rules for this award:
- Post the award within my post.
- Send the award to 12 bloggers who add a little sunshine to my life.
- Post links to the 12 blogs I've sent the award to.
- Leave a comment on their blog telling them they've gotten the award.
- Put these instructions in my post so they'll know what to do!

I've seen this award on several other blogs, so I'm just going to post twelve bloggers who add sunshine to my life, even if they've already received it.  I hope you'll stop by and visit their blogs if you need a little bit of sunshine in your life.
I also received the Happy 101 Sweet Friends award, which comes with the following rules:
- Copy the image and paste it to my blog

- List 10 things that make me happy, and do one of them today.

Noelle asked if she could list the 10 things that made her happy, so I said she could.  So here are Noelle's answers:

1. When mom or dad come home from work and greet me.
2. When we go for a walk somewhere with lots of interesting smells.
3. When Bernice or Angie C. come over and visit me.
4. When Remi or a foster dog plays bitey-face or tug-of-war with me.
5. Sleeping on my dad's lap while he plays his X-Box.
6. Sleeping on my mom's lap while she plays Farmville does important work on her computer.
7. Getting treats just for doing things like sitting or lying down.  It's so easy!
8. Chasing cats.
9. Chewing up frisbees.
10. Showing my mom and dad how much I love them.

And finally, we've been tagged by the House of Cats and Mayzie's Dog Blog for the photo tag game.  Here are the rules: Go to your first photo folder, find the 10th picture, post that photo and explain the story behind it. Then, tag five blogs to do the same.

So since the House of Cats tagged me, I went to my cat pictures folder and found the tenth picture, which is from May 2009:

This is Anastasia, a previous foster kitten.  I was trying to take her picture for the website, but she was not happy about it.  I did not use this picture on her web page, because she looks a bit scary.  But I liked the picture enough to keep it on my computer.  Fortunately no one ever saw this picture, and Anastasia was successfully adopted.

And since Mayzie the dog tagged me too, I went to my dog pictures folder and found this one from May 2008:

It is one of my previous foster dogs, named Vala.  She was the most energetic, happy dog I have ever fostered, and she just loved people.  I wanted a picture of her with her ears up, like she normally looked.  But when I had my husband hold her so I could get her picture (otherwise she'd go running and jump up on me), she would put her ears back.  So Dave decided to be helpful and hold her ears up for her.  Poor dog.  My fosters have to put up with a lot from us sometimes.

Thanks Amy and Mayzie for the fun game!  I decided to tag five other foster blogs, in case they want to play too.  Of course they may be too busy chasing after playing with their foster pets to participate.

Thank you to my four faithful readers (Hi Grandma!) who have put up with me for so long, and thank you to all my newer readers and new blogging friends for making me feel so welcome in your community.

Administrative Stuff

First, I've changed the location of my blog to http://www.dogfostermom.com/.  This doesn't really matter to you, since you can keep going to the original location and it will redirect you automatically to the new location.  But it matters to me, because during the transition it somehow removed all of your opinion button results.  I love reading what you think of each post, whether in the comments or in the opinion buttons.  So I'm sad that the opinion buttons have all been reset to zero.  Would you mind going back through my blog and filling in the opinion buttons for my old posts?  There are only 340 posts - is that too much to ask?

Okay, fine.  I can live without validation.  Probably.  Let's move on.

The second order of business is Mango Minster 2010.  I've made many new friends through Mango's dog show, and many more thanks to Amy and the House of Cats.  Most of these friends are cats and dogs with their very own blogs.  My dogs Remi and Noelle have to share this blog with all their foster siblings, and my cat Merlin never gets to post.  But Remi and Noelle did get to enter Mango Minster 2010, and in the next couple of days the voting will be conducted in each of their categories.  Remi is entered in the Hard Workers category (here's why), and Noelle is entered in the Bad Sports category (for these reasons).  Stop by Mango Minster and check out the show!

Mango Minster has various officially sanctioned events, and Remi also entered Tucker's SitStay Competition.  Tucker is a Harlequin Great Dane just like Remi - that's Tucker in the picture, not Remi!  Tucker has to put up with cats at his house just like Remi.  He's also petitioning his parents to get him a pibble like Noelle (well maybe not JUST like Noelle).  I wonder if Remi is Tucker's role model?!  There are a lot of great entries in Tucker's competition, so make sure to visit when you have a few minutes!

And finally, the biggest news of all.  Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VI is only a few days away, and my previous foster puppy Bear is the star player!  Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration.  But he is in the starting lineup!   You can read how Bear ended up in the Puppy Bowl here.  The Puppy Bowl VI will air this Sunday, Feb 7th, at 3pm e/p on Animal Planet.  Next week I'll finally be able to share with you the pictures I took during filming - if I can find them!

Raise money through Internet Searches; Poll Results

Here's a good way to raise money just by searching the Internet, or shopping online.  Go to http://www.igive.com/, and enter your chosen cause (my cause is All Paws Rescue, Inc.)  Then if you want to shop, you can search by online store or by the product you want to buy.  Or if you just want to do a search for information on the Internet, go to http://www.isearchigive.com/, and type in your search criteria just like you would at Google or Yahoo.  Right now each search raises $0.02 for your chosen cause, and each purchase to a qualified store raises a percentage of the sale to your store.  So far I've raised over $25 for my chosen causes (because I like to shop online).  You can even install an igive.com toolbar to make sure that you don't forget to shop through their site.  The more people that use this, the more money your cause makes, and it doesn't cost you anything.  Currently igive.com has raised over $4 million for various causes!

-------------------------------------
And now, for the results of the poll.

I decided to write a more in-depth blog post about a few subjects, and wanted to find out what you wanted to read about.  I didn't expect the results to be so close.  Now I can write about all of the subjects and know that at least one person out there will be interested!  But your favorite topic was about the challenges of fostering.  Which surprised me.  Because I thought that might sound like a depressing post.  But the great thing about this blog is that I can tell you the truth about my experiences, both the good and the bad.  I'm not trying to recruit anyone to a cause or to convince you of anything.  I just get to share my thoughts with anyone who cares to read them, and so if you want to hear all about the challenges I face with fostering, I will tell you.  In a few days.  First I'm going to post about some of the other topics.  Because I already started writing those blog posts and it's easier that way.  Thank you for your understanding.

P.S.  I like including pictures in my blog posts.  So I'm going to put in some random pictures of my previous foster pets in these upcoming in-depth blog posts.  They will have absolutely nothing to do with the posts, so don't bother trying to find a connection.  They just give you something to look at while you read.  Besides the text, I mean.  Nevermind.

New Poll

There is a new poll at the top of the page that will let you vote on which subject sounds most interesting.  The poll will close in just a few days, so choose your favorite topics now.

Blogging

I've made some new friends since I started writing this blog.  It's great to find other people out there with similar interests, and to read about their lives as well.  Here are some of the interesting people I've met through my blog:

Amanda - she lives in Minnesota, and she takes the best pictures ever.  I love this picture she took of her son at Halloween with her dog and two foster dogs.  She's also super-nice and gave me some photography hints and encouragement.  She fosters pit bulls, and has an adorable son.  You can visit her blog here.
Ellen - she is the founder of the St. Louis Senior Dog Project, and she finds homes for senior dogs like Sara.  Sara lived most of her life chained up outdoors in North Dakota, but thanks to Ellen and many other volunteers, Sara is now in a wonderful home.  Ellen takes in the senior dogs that many others give up on, and does an amazing job finding them homes.  It's great to hear about others in the St. Louis area that I may have never known about if it weren't for the Internet and blogging.  You can read more from Ellen's blog here

Sara - This time Sara is the human, and Layla is the dog.  I just checked out Sara's blog today when she left a recent comment on one of my blog posts, and I am very impressed (and jealous).  Not only has she adopted and then helped a dog with a lot of issues, but she also does all those things that interest me (dog training, obedience, rally, agility, etc) that I never seem to find time for.  You can check out her blog here.

And I would be remiss if I did not include my friends Angie and Rhonda.  I did not meet them through blogging, but they both write excellent blogs about rescue and they have become good friends of mine.

Angie not only inspired me to start this blog by reading hers, but she has always continued to give me help with rescue questions and photography questions. She's a professional photographer and puts up with my questions like "if I am using a lens that doesn't have a zoom, do I actually have to MOVE to take the picture?"  Seriously, I asked her this on Saturday, and not only did she not laugh at me, but she assured me that yes, I did actually have to move the camera and there was no secret button I didn't know about.  You can read her blog here.

Rhonda is one of the best writers I've ever met.  I always look forward to seeing new posts on her blog.  She's also an awesome photographer, and another crazy rescuer like me who takes care of too many dogs and cats, and loves every minute of it.  You can view her blog here.
