Piper's Story

As a puppy, Piper probably looked something like this:

Like many dogs, Piper at one point found herself without a home. She may have been given away free to a good home on CraigsList, or perhaps she was just let loose in the country to fend for herself. Whatever happened, she ended up at the home of an animal hoarder. Yesterday, when the animals were rescued, authorities found between 100-150 animals on the property, including dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, goats, and several other animals including several doves and a skunk living INSIDE the house! Many different shelters and rescue groups stepped up to save these animals and get them the care they needed. TASTC, a wonderful shelter in the area, worked hard to find temporary foster homes for these animals.

When All Paws Rescue, the group I volunteer with, stepped forward and offered to foster up to ten of the dogs, I was very proud to be part of such an amazing group of people. We were told the dogs were mostly under two years old and were small breeds which should be easily adoptable once they were released by the courts for adoption. We made arrangements for the dogs (I offered to take only one because I have several other foster dogs currently), and we waited for the call to come get them. As the hour approached, I prepared to leave work and head to the pre-appointed meeting place to pick up the dogs. Several other rescue groups were also meeting there to take in the dogs that they had offered to help. Then I got a phone call. It was my friend who was coordinating the rescue for All Paws and had offered to take four of them herself. She told me that among the many young small-breed dogs, they found a 16 year old pit bull. My heart fell – who would take this dog? All the groups helping out were anticipating dogs such as Maltese and Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds – the chances of someone taking an elderly pit bull were very slim. It’s not that the rescuers didn’t want to help her – but a commitment to foster a highly adoptable dog for thirty days is quite a bit different than a commitment to foster a 16-year-old pit bull who will have a really tough time finding a home. Still, this dog deserved to get into a foster home more than any of them. So I called the nice people at Wonder Weims who were coordinating all of the rescuers, and asked about the 16-year-old pit bull. That’s when I found out the dog was blind, and had a growth on her, and was very sweet. I asked what would happen to her, and at the time they had not found anyone to take her. That’s when I heard the words coming out of my mouth – “I’ll take her, at least temporarily.” I knew that my house was not the best situation for her – she’s mostly blind and very frail, and I have several energetic large dogs who would easily bowl her over. But at least she could stay with me until a longer-term foster home was found.

So a few hours later, the transport van pulled up in the parking lot, and they began to hand out dogs to the various groups for fostering. I helped load up the All Paws dogs, and quickly fell in love with a scruffy little Chihuahua pup. The dogs, although skinny and extremely smelly, were all adorable. Then as most of the other dogs were led away, they brought out Piper.

This frail, malnourished dog was missing an eye and looked overwhelmed by the noise and the people. As I walked her around the parking lot, she sniffed everyone she passed and even wagged her tail. She was not a small, fluffy little dog that everyone would want. She could barely walk, and stumbled several times. Her skin was awful, and she had several growths that would need checked out. But as I looked in her one good eye, and promised her that I would take care of her, she looked at me with trust and licked my face in thanks.

Piper
Last night Piper got to spend the night in a clean kennel, on a soft bed, with good food and water – all things she hasn’t known in too long. Although it’s obvious that she is confused by her new location and change in circumstances, she continues to be loving and affectionate. I may have given up the adorable Chihuahua pup in order to take Piper (although I’m still trying to figure out how to take them both!) but I know I made the right decision in taking Piper. And while I hope to find her a foster home where she can get more of the attention and care that she deserves, she will have a home here with me for as long as she needs.

There were many heroes in this situation - the people from TASTC and Act Now and WonderWeims who coordinated and made this rescue happen, as well as the many other rescue groups who worked together to save these animals. All of the foster homes and shelter workers have their own rescue stories (one friend has spent the entire day bathing, trimming nails, and deworming eight of these dogs!) This is just Piper’s story, one of over a hundred in this case alone.  And as with all the other rescued animals, Piper's story is really just beginning.

Birthday Post From Ziggy

Hi, I'm Ziggy!  In case you had not heard, today is my BIRTHDAY! I am now three years old.  You can tell I'm all grown up now because I was able to sit still for this picture without destuffing the Ziggy toy next to me.  My foster mom was very proud of me and gave me lots of good treats for this.

My with my friend Leanna
Thanks Leanna!
Since my foster mom forgot my birthday the past two years, this was the first year I have had any help celebrating my birthday.  It has been amazing!  First, my friend Leanna and my foster mom gave me a surprise party on Saturday. They invited all my friends from All Paws Rescue, and when I walked into PetSmart, thinking it was just another regular adoption event, everyone in the store… I mean all my friends… I mean a few crazy All Paws people started singing Happy Birthday! Then Angie, one of my All Paws friends, gave me some chew bones to take home with me, and  my friend Leanna showed up and she brought me my very own iced tea (since I drank her dad’s iced tea when I went for a visit) and my very own Monster bone.

I immediately went into my crate and waited for Leanna to give me my bone. I was SO excited!

Me in a crate waiting for a really BIG chew bone
I wonder how fast I can eat this?
I proceeded to enjoy my monster bone for the next 23 minutes and 54 seconds.

Me enjoying my bone
So good!
It was the best 23 minutes and 54 seconds of my life!

In addition to the fun party with singing and presents, I had another great surprise this week. Several Facebook friends shared me on their wall and asked people to come visit me, so by the end of the week I had over 100 new friends! This not only means my foster mom owes me another chew bone (I get a new bone every time I get another 100 friends!) but it also means there are a lot of new people out there reading about me and helping me to find my forever home!

Also for my birthday, my friend Shuma made a video of me! It shows a lot of the fun things I’ve done in my life, like eating bananas, and wearing silly hats, and doing agility. I had my foster mom put it on my web page right away so everyone could see how much fun it would be to adopt me! Thank you Shuma for this great present, and for giving me treats every time you see me!

Thank you very much to all of you for supporting me, a deaf homeless pit bull, and helping to make this birthday the best one EVER.

Love,
Ziggy

Starved

Last week an e-mail came, requesting help with a dog in a rural area.  The dog had been removed from its owners by an Animal Control Officer due to extreme neglect.  The dog was discovered in a small makeshift pen with only a turned over garbage can for shelter.  He was thin, sad, and just about frozen.
Bev, an All Paws Rescue volunteer, agreed to take him.  She got him into the vet right away, and found he is in bad shape.  He is over 20 pounds underweight.  He has a double ear infection, whip worms, and eyes that are almost infected.  He also has a lot of sores on his feet and hocks.  The poor guy is a wreck.

Bev has started him on medication and high calorie healthy food.  She has named him Bogart, and he is finally getting the love and care he needs.  I went over to visit him yesterday, and was shocked at his appearance.  It was obvious that he felt bad, but he was still very eager to be petted and receive attention.  His owners not only starved him physically, but I believe he was starved for affection as well.

It'll be awhile before Bogart is ready for adoption.  In the meantime, if you'd like to help with his medical bills, or send him a get-well card, you can find the link to All Paws Rescue in the sidebar.

Celebration of Lights

The city of O'Fallon, MO has an annual drive-through Christmas light display at Fort Zumwalt Park.  Each scene is designed and funded by local organizations, churches and businesses.  All Paws Rescue is one of the local organizations that participates each year.  So if you get a chance to visit, make sure to look for the All Paws display.
The event was started in 1991, and it attracts over 8,000 vehicles each year, and over 5,000 individuals on walk-through night.  The one-mile long display has over 1 million lights!   I set up five of those lights.  Okay technically they probably don't count the spotlights as lights.  But I helped to set up a few of the spotlights, and the Santa in this picture.  Other All Paws volunteers did the rest of the All Paws scene set-up.  They did a good job.

Here's a close-up picture of the manger scene, with one of my favorite reindeer - Binky the reindeerdog!  He was just a temporary guest though - I don't think he'll be there every night.  He has better things to do, like sniffing out hidden Christmas presents.  And cookies.  I think Christmas might be Binky's favorite time of the year.

There is also a walk-through night on December 8th between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.  On that night, you can walk through the park, visit with Santa and his reindeer, and visit booths filled with holiday crafts, gifts, and fesitval food.  There will be fireworks at 7:25pm.

All Paws will be selling hot chocolate and cookies - yum!  Please stop by and say hello.  I may be helping to sell  the hot chocolate and cookies, but they may have me doing something different since I can't be trusted around cookies.  Binky and I have that in common.

Dear beta testers...

You guys are great.  Some of your test adoption applications made me laugh out loud.  I especially enjoyed the one from the person who said their pet's primary caregiver would be the dog (among many other funny answers).

I do appreciate all of you testing the website for me and offering suggestions for improvement.  I've incorporated several of your suggestions into the website, and would love to hear more ideas to make it even better.  You can visit the website here:  http://allpawsrescue.info/.

All Paws Adoption Events

We have fun at our adoption events.  We throw balls for the dogs to see how well they can catch them.  This is Shady.  He looooooves his ball.

Sometimes we dress up the dogs in fun collars.  This is Morty.  He's getting a head start on the holidays with his cute Santa scarf.  I hope he finds a home in time for Christmas!

This is Beckett.  I love this dog.

Doesn't she look like she's having fun?

This is Momma Mia.  She seemed to be saying "How embarrassing. They make me wear this silly collar and sit in this chair just to take my picture."  Secretly I think she liked it.

Sometimes when we're really bored we wrap up a dog's head in bandages and ask for money to have his ear sewn back on.

I'm kidding!!!!  Unfortunately Bobby Hill had a small run-in with another dog and had to have his ear bandaged up.  Here's a picture of his nemesis:

Okay - so the other guy didn't really look like that... but I bet in Bobby Hill's mind he does!

Beta Testers Needed

I like saying that.  Beta Testers Needed.  It makes me feel important, and smart.  Like I know what I'm talking about.  I really don't.  But please don't tell anyone - I think I have a few people fooled.  I know nothing about html or programming or creating websites or setting up domains.  But I am good at research.  Google is my friend.  Actually, Isearchigive is my friend.  It's like Google, only every time I search I raise money for All Paws Rescue.  I'm becoming quite a big earner for them with all the research I do.

My latest research project was how to create a website.  So now I get to ask for beta testers for the website I created, on the new domain I set up, all without any clue of what I was doing.  This is why I need testers.  I found out a website will look different on each screen depending on the resolution, and what browser each person is using to view the website.  Don't worry, you can be a beta tester without knowing anything about what I'm talking about.  All you have to do is go to this website, and tell me how it looks.  Is the writing too small?  Are the pictures too big?  Did I misspell anything?  Are there extra spaces that shouldn't be there, or extra pictures or characters that don't belong?  And while you're at it, feel free to offer suggestions for improvement.  This is not yet an official All Paws Rescue website, although it may someday become one, so I'd like any input you can offer to make it the best website it can be, given that its being created by someone with absolutely no knowledge of html or css or any of those other goofy letters that mean something to web programmers.  Oh yeah, and you might want to check for run-on sentences while you're at it.

How to Beta Test
1.  Go to http://www.allpawsrescue.info/
2.  Pretend you're wanting to adopt a pet.  Or wanting to donate.  Or wanting to turn in a pet.  Or get a pet spayed/neutered.  Or any of the other reasons people visit a rescue group's website.
3.  Check out the various pages.  Fill out the forms (just put BETA TESTER in for your name!).  Send a test e-mail.  Do anything you would do if this were a real web page - but if you donate, you will be donating your own real money, so keep that in mind!  After trying out all the features you want to test, let me know the results!
4.  Send errors, suggestions, etc via e-mail to dogfostermom@aol.com.

Thank you!

Penguin and Puffin were adopted!

Two of my three tuxedo kittens have now been adopted!  There were some other happy endings at PetSmart today as well.  Fancy, a cute hound mix dog, went home with this very nice lady.

And remember Champ?  He went with me to the JDRF walk this year.  He's now been adopted!   Obviously his bandana worked for him.  I think the adorable look on his face might have had something to do with it too.

I also spoke with some nice people who had found a puppy that someone dumped on the side of the road.  They took the puppy home and have been caring for him, and now they're going to foster him through All Paws Rescue until he finds a permanent home.  They stopped by today and I took these adorable pictures of Joker and his girl.  He should be ready for adoption in a few weeks, so if you're interested in adopting him, you can fill out an online application here

Pawsta for Pets

Having recently joined All Paws Rescue, I haven't gotten very involved in the group yet.  Oh sure, I foster for them, and attend just about every adoption event they have, but there is so much more involved in running a rescue.  There are phone messages and e-mails to answer, fundraisers to organize, grants to write, not to mention the accounting and paperwork that comes along with running a non-profit organization.  I've enjoyed my time doing nothing but fostering, but I'm starting to feel guilty for not helping more.  I'm going to start working on some grants soon, and I'm planning to help with an upcoming fundraiser.  But I have to be honest with you - I totally hate fundraising.  I know most people hate it, but it's one of those necessary evils.  And as a foster mom I get to see the need for fundraising more than most.  For example, Chenille my foster Pomeranian is having blood work done, and then she'll need a dental on top of her spay surgery and regular vet care - that's going to cost a LOT more than we'll get back in her adoption fee.  So I want to help raise money for Chenille and the other pets that All Paws saves every day.  I'm just BAD at it.  There is a fundraiser this Sunday for All Paws, so several weeks ago I offered to sell some tickets to the spaghetti dinner and some raffle tickets.  I got eight tickets, plus a whole stack of raffle tickets to sell.  And so far I have sold TWO tickets to the event (thanks Mom and Dad - well, thanks Mom - I don't even think my Dad knows he's going yet).  And I've sold absolutely no raffle tickets.  I'm pathetic.  In a last-ditch desperate attempt to feel better about myself (not to mention to help out All Paws), I'm posting the event here in hopes that someone out there will want to help the animals, (or will feel sorry for me) and will buy a ticket or two.  So here's the deal.  It's a Spaghetti Dinner with a silent auction this Sunday evening (4-8pm) at the Elks Lodge in O'Fallon, MO.  The doors open at 4:00pm, and dinner is served from 5:00pm - 6:30pm.  Tickets are $10 for adults or $5 for children under 6 years old.  So please, if you don't have plans on Sunday night, come out and support All Paws Rescue.  We will have tickets for sale on Saturday at the St. Charles PetSmart at Zumbehl and Hwy 70 between 10am and 3pm, or you can purchase tickets at the door on Sunday.

Now about those raffle tickets... they are raffling off a wheelbarrow full of booze!  It is quite an impressive list too - I think there are over 30 bottles of a wide variety of alcohol in there - enough to stock a bar, or have a really long party with all of your friends.  And you do not have to be present to win.  So if you're interested in purchasing a raffle ticket, they are 1 ticket for $5 or 3 tickets for $10, and they will also be available on Saturday, or at the event on Sunday.  Or you can e-mail me to let me know if you'd like to purchase the tickets online!  Here is the flyer for the event.  I hope to see you there!

Garage Sale this weekend!

All Paws Rescue is having a garage sale this Saturday starting at 10am at the O'Reilly's Auto Parts store parking lot on Main Street (just north of the Highway 70/Hwy K intersection).  Not only will there be a lot of garage sale treasures, but you can also purchase food, pet beds, and other items.  Bring the kids along to meet Scooby-Doo and Garfield.  How cool is that - a cartoon dog and cat... I read that Scooby-Doo and Garfield would be there, but it took it awhile (like two weeks) to click that they aren't just cartoon characters but are actually cartoon animals like the ones that All Paws is raising money to help.  Duh... don't laugh at me please.  Whomever thought of having a cartoon cat and cartoon dog at an event to raise money for homeless cats and dogs is brilliant.  And I'm just sorry that I wasn't intelligent enough to see it right away.  Hopefully the rest of the world isn't quite as oblivious as me.

There will also be various pets there for adoption, including my new foster puppies!  Get 'em in, and get 'em out, that's my motto.  Seriously, the sooner they can get into permanent homes, the easier on them for adjusting, and the easier on the foster mom (me) who has less time to get attached.  Plus that is that much sooner I can go save some more who need help.  So if you have some time this Saturday, come visit, play with the puppies, buy some food, search the garage sale items, and meet the cartoon characters.  Just please don't point out to me while you're there that they are cartoon ANIMALS.  I'm embarrassed enough as it is.

Lions and Tigers and Bears...

Oh my!
That had absolutely nothing to do with fostering, but because I like the pictures (taken this week at the St. Louis Zoo), I thought I'd share them anyway.
---
I didn't take any of my fosters to adoptions today, but I did go to PetSmart and hang out for awhile.  I'm going to be fostering with a new rescue group - All Paws Rescue.  Well they aren't new, they're just new to me.  So today I went and met several of the volunteers.  It's a group I've heard a lot of good things about, and I have met a few of their volunteers before, so that made it less scary to go meet everyone.  And all the people I met today were very nice and made me feel welcome.  They even asked me to help with their upcoming fundraiser, which made me feel like a part of the group already.  I like to be useful, and I'm really looking forward to it.  By the way, they're looking for donations for their silent auction.  So if you can donate any kind of goods or services from your place of employment or know of someone else who may be able to help, that would be awesome.  You can e-mail me at dogfostermom@aol.com for more information.
