Moving

Thank you all so much for your support! I think I'll have some interesting stories to share as I search for new living arrangements. Since it will take some time to get our house ready to sell, I'm looking to either rent a place or possibly buy a very cheap property. Renting is nice because I'm not locked into a property that I then have to try and sell in a year or two. But it limits me on taking in foster animals during that time, and I've heard too many stories about renters being unexpectedly forced to move when the house they were renting was either foreclosed or sold. So at this point I'm leaving my options open, and checking out both rentals and purchases. Either way I need something very inexpensive since we still have to pay for our house, plus pay for the cost of fixing it up to sell. New carpet, repair drywall, new baseboards and trim, painting - it all adds up quickly! But I don't mind living in a small place as long as there is room for the dogs.

So one option I found was an apartment complex very close to my work that allows dogs and cats, and is extremely cheap for that area (a studio apt is around $500 a month). They even have a dog park on site. So I immediately e-mailed them to find out their breed and weight restrictions. Remember, this is the place that is advertising how pet friendly they are. When I got their response, I couldn't help but laugh. It said "You are more than welcome to have up to 2 pets in your home. To move-in a pet there is a non-refundable fee of $200 under 25 lbs., $400 over 25 lbs (THIS IS PER PET). Additional Pet info: To move in we require vet statements that show breed of dog, full maturity weight, and shots up to date and for cats that they are declawed and spayed or neutered. Ferrets are to be destinked. Our breed restrictions include: No Rottweilers, Dobermans, Chows, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Dalmatians, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Wolf Hybrids (Wolfdog), Mastiffs and Great Danes."

It was interesting to note that they listed Staffordshire Bull Terriers separately than "Pit Bulls", which as you now know are not really a breed at all! I immediately e-mailed them back and said my cat was not declawed and my foster dog is a pit bull mix, so thank you but it would not be a good fit. I also mentioned that while my pit bull mix is not aggressive, my previous foster dog was very aggressive, and I therefore I think they may want to add Pomeranian to their list of banned breeds. :-)

I must admit to you that the last two Pomeranians I fostered were not in the least aggressive - but I have heard of some pretty aggressive Pomeranians! Also my reply could have been worse - I was really tempted to reply with this:

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the information on your apartment complex.  My cat is not declawed, but since you don't have any weight restrictions I will just go ahead and bring both of my dogs instead.  I am relieved that they are not on the list of banned breeds, and look forward to introducing them around the apartment complex. I have enclosed pictures so you can meet them in advance.

This is my 150 pound Newfoundland named Drool Monster. He does tend to slobber a lot, and fling the slobber around when he gets excited, or when he drinks, or when he plays.  But he's very friendly and really enjoys meeting new people.  I think you'll like him a lot.  You may just want to bring a change of clothes to work every day so whenever we stop by your office, you will be prepared for him.

And this is my Dogo Argentino.  His name is Killer.  I must admit I was a bit worried that he would be banned due to his breed, so I was relieved that only those truly vicious dogs like pit bulls and Dalmatians were on your list.  Killer would never hurt a fly.  Although he is a bit nervous around people who are scared of him because of his looks.  But since you are a pet-friendly facility, I'm sure we won't have any problems at all.

Thank you, and I can't wait to move in!

Sincerely,
Your Pet-Friendly Future Tenant

Uh, declawing is mutilation, akin to cutting off human fingers at the first knuckle. Many European countries ban it. It *should* be banned in North America. I can't believe this.

I'm glad you see the humour in this "pet friendly" place because frankly, I'm incensed! I'd have sent your preferred letter. Or worse.

Pet friendly? My fat @ss it's pet friendly!!!!

oh gosh! we are so happy to see you can laugh about all of this. I love your letter you wanted to send, I would have been tempted as well! i hate to hear it when cats are declawed. We moved out of our apartment for that whole 2 pets rule... now we have 2 cats, a dog, fish, a bunny, and foster babies.(and we rent!) You will find the right property!

You are hilarious! I wish you lived in my neck of the woods, I'd let you and the whole crew stay with me. I'm sending good thoughts and prayers your way. Hope you find a great place soon.

Pet friendly? Who are they kidding?!

Your letter made me laugh! We are purring and praying that you will find a suitable place real soon.

No way - they say no Great Danes? What? Great Dane = Gentle Giant why would they ban any of us? Plus, declawing cats is very painful and mean. You should ask them if they would like their fingernails ripped out of their nailbeds and make them walk around with socks on thier feet and poop in newspaper litter for months. Just sayin' those people sound like tools.

HEY! Not funny, that looks like me! Seriously -- what are they thinking! Declaw cats! Do some research people! NOT NEEDED! AND why only certain breeds. I noticed a Newf wasn't on the list. If someone decided not to keep a Newf groomed they can be a little messy! Wow, what we don't run into out there!

I do love your response. It must be frustrating now, but I bet you'll find something good soon. Here people paid way too much for their places, and they are actually renting nice places for less, and waiving pet restrictions hoping to attract renters. I still admire you for your dedication.

Well, Miss Dog Foster Mom, I'm very much glad you're keeping your sense of humor through this whole dumb thing. I liked the email you sent very much but oh, there's this little (okay, sorta big) part of me that wishes you had sent the other one.

And declawing kittehs!? Why, how would those peoples feel if we cuts the top of their fingers off?

I hopes you find something just perfect for you soon!

Mayzie

UGH. I had a feeling their pet restrictions would include a great dane. It's so funny how "pet friendly" places are only friendly to Chihuahuas and other small dogs. So annoying.
I had to re-read that line about declawed cats to make sure I read it right. Who requires declawed cats?! OI.
Good luck on your search!

We're glad you've got your sense of humour about this. Good luck with the search. I didn't realize that subdivisions could impose rules like that on home owners.

Ok blogger is acting up and my whole funny comment didn't go through. I said that you should send the letter, since you wouldn't live there anyway.

Then I mentioned that I totally found you a house in O'Fallon (I just used that since that is where All Paws is) because I like to look at houses online when I am bored. It is big (2800+ sf) on an acre and has A/C for 99,000 - but it has been on the market for 200+ days so I bet you could get it cheap. I love looking at different areas because the houses are so different, as are the costs - you would never find a house up here for that low. Yeah, it has been really slow at work lately.

If the subdivision board does not enforce the two pet rule against everyone in the subdivision, but just you, it is a discriminatory practice. It may be worth consulting a lawyer for a short period just to clarify. Could also be used to make them back down. A harrassment claim against your neighbours may also be an idea to explore. They are detracting from your constitutional right to quiet enjoyment of your property and are causing you pain, suffering and needless expense.

WOW. I wish you'd sent the second option. BOL! Aside from being unnecessary and inhumane, I don't understand why a declawed cat is a requirement? I've never heard of such a thing! Good riddance! Sending up prayers that you find something truly pet friendly and soon!

Zona

It's getting harder and harder to find an apt that will allow pets. You may have to stick with rental houses! Good luck!!

Generally all "Pet Friendly" means when it come to apartments is that they allow one or two small pets subject to approval and for extra rent as opposed to the places that have only a "No pets" rule. Unfortunately.

I do hope that when you sell you're able to find some buyers who are much more objectionable than someone with a lot of pets. Like someone with 17 undiciplined kids some of whom have slightly criminal tendencies and big sub-woofers.

I got a good laugh out of that one. Your letter was priceless. Dog breed specific rules are so totally stupid I cannot even think about it.

If it makes you feel better an assualt on me, by his landlord is forcing my boyfriend to move. He has 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 ferrets, aswell as several reptiles. Not to mention all his furniture. He rents and we don't know wtf to do yet. We will move on and start a new, but finding a building that will rent to someone with a 12 foot burmese python is very very difficult!!!

wow... they're quite anal aren't they.. and here i always thought that all condos in the states were totally dog friendly? must be an impression i got from tv and movies :) in malaysia, most condos don't allow dogs and cats AT ALL. doesn't matter how big, small, well-trained or whatever. people caught having pets risk having their pets seized by evil city council monsters and brought to the horrible malaysian pounds.

Laurie - You know what my response is already.

Send the letter (just for kicks) and then get you a good lawyer who knows how to deal with homeowner associations.

Laurie, I'm with Joanne, too. All rules apply to all residents. If you have to move, everyone with more than two animals has to move. Not many subdivision associations have money for legal fees (unless a lawyer in the subdivision writes a letter for free). I think they'd back down, too. May well be worth getting a little legal advice.
