Ziggy goes for a walk

Ziggy is not a normal dog.  Here is another of his many interesting quirks.  When we go for a walk, most dogs will stop and sniff at normal things.  You know, like fire hydrants, and trees, and grass areas where other dogs have been.  Not Ziggy.  He walks with single-minded purpose, seldom stopping to sniff or investigate.  The only thing he does stop to sniff - almost every time we pass one - is a storm drain.  Seriously.  Isn't this weird?  Here's a short video.  This is exactly what happens on every walk, for every single storm drain we pass.  I can't identify anything special about these storm drains. My own dogs and previous foster dogs have always walked past them without a second glance. But not Ziggy.

If he could hear me, I'd be saying something like "Look Ziggy, check out this fire hydrant!  No?  Okay, well how about this bush?  Lots of neighborhood dogs stop here!  Or this tree?   Ziggy?  Okay then, let's just keep going....right past this storm drain... or not."

Jack likes to sniff manhole covers. Which is always fun when we're crossing the street in traffic and he decides it's the most interesting smell in the world!

When my cat, Smithers, comes for a walk with me and the dogs, he will sometimes jump down in he storm drain. Maybe Ziggy knows somewhere in the world, there is a cat in one of these things. He must find it!

Maybe it has something to with his interest in construction. Possibly in another life he was in construction or an inspector and specialized in storm drains. I think that's as plausible as any explanation.

lotsa licks, Lola

I had to laugh at that video. The look on his face! It seems like he is checking in with his alien friends or passing along secrets to undercover agents.

Oh! Me and Brudder Ranger LUVS to sniff those things! I'm pretty sure that little creatures live down there and you gotta gives it a little sniff. You know, um, just in case one of them are, uh, stuck and you have to, you know, save them or something. Yep, that's it.

My dogs current dogs don't pay a lot of attention to storm drains, but the previous pair did. One time when we were walking we heard some noises and went to investigate. We found one of our neighbor dogs, an old poodle, in the drain! (A JD-type neighblor kid is the suspect, since he was feuding with the dog's owner, but that is another story!) We picked up the doggy and took her home. After that, Anniebelle and Georgie always stopped at that drain and checked it out. I smile when I remember how they continued to check out that drain for years after we found the poodle! So they may have sent psychic thoughts to Ziggy, just in case a poodle needs some help! Linda

With Ziggy, nothing is surprising... he seems to be looking for something... something only he knows... oh! how we love his quirkiness :)

My dog is also interested in storm drains! (But other stuff, too). It always freaks me out because of the Stephen King movie, "It." :)

Well, not having dogs that I walk I can't really talk about if they are of interest or not (the few times we watched my aunts dogs we didn't really go by any storm drains that I noticed). My thoughts at first were maybe he can feel some sort of vibration or something from it that you don't notice, and that he only gets it from the drains, and not trees and stuff. But maybe it is just a Ziggy thing!

So funny. I wonder if it has something to do with an experience from a prior life...or Ziggy's just a bit strange.

Maybe he is practicing to be a search and rescue dog. He just hasn't found anything down there to rescue yet.
