Introducing Butterscotch

My mom called me on Saturday after adoptions to ask me if I wanted another cat.  Ummmm...six foster cats is plenty, thank you very much.  But she told me how my sister's neighbors had found a cat left in a box in an empty apartment after the tenants moved out.  The neighbor who is the owner of the apartment complex brought the cat home, and was going to leave him outside for a few days, and if no one took him in, he planned to take him to a shelter on Monday.  My mom told me the cat was very sweet and was letting all the neighborhood kids play with him and carry him around.  So I folded.  I drove over to meet the cat, and found this.

He is only five or six months old, and is very sweet.  I took him to my parent's house and he immediately curled up in my Dad's lap and started purring.  He knew a good thing when he saw it.  So, knowing how soft-hearted my parents are, I said I could take him home, but he'd have to stay in a cage, quarantined from the rest of the house, until I was able to get him to the vet to get checked out the next day.  And of course my mom said he could stay at their house for the night.  Ha - gotcha.  It's now five days later, and the cat has yet to leave my parent's house.  Oh they don't want to adopt him - but they are willing to save him from the torture of living at my house.  Although my mom babysits my nieces and nephews, and I think my house might be preferable to having three children constantly trying to hold him and play with him.  But hey, if she's willing to foster him until he's ready for adoption, I am not going to say no!

My niece Darby named him Butterscotch.  Between her and my mom, they almost have my sister and brother-in-law talked into adopting him.  In the meantime, he's getting a lot of love and attention at my parent's house.

And a lot of playtime with his favorite feather toy.

And when I asked him what he thought of going to live with Darby and Jack forever, he did this.

I'm just not sure if he was cheering or screaming in fear.

UPDATE
I'm very sad to share the news that I originally wrote this post a few days ago, and since then Butterscotch has passed away.  Yesterday he was at the vet's office getting neutered and readied for adoption, and shortly after his surgery he stopped breathing and the vet was unable to resuscitate him.  It appears that he may have had an undetectable heart problem.  My neice and nephew are heartbroken.  Only a week with this sweet, funny cat was not nearly enough.

I heard somewhere that... a DAY well lived can be worth a lifetime. Perhaps that is how you should look at this one.

How sad - he was such a beautiful little boy.

But what a wonderful life he had while he was with your family. I'm sorry for your neice, nephew, mom and dad. They should feel very special to have known and loved such a great little guy.

Oh, that's so sad. I feel like neutering is such a routine thing...I guess the heart issue would have been a problem later? It looked like he had such a great time with your family.

Oh this is so sad! But at least for the last few days of his life he had lots of fun, and happiness, and knew that he was loved. We are sending lots of purrs and prayers to everyone.

Poor Butterscotch. I'm very much sorry to hear that this poor little guy never got a proper chance at life. And I'm most sorry that your niece and nephew are so sad. But they surely gave sweet Butterscotch the happiest week of his life!

i am so so deeply sorry about your loss.. and your niece and nephew's loss. sometimes these sad things happen no matter what we do and how hard we try. sometimes we are so powerless and its frustrating.. but
think about what you did do for him.. you gave butterscotch love and a family. i'm sure he was a happy kitty as he crossed the rainbow bridge.

My sympathy for your family--death on the surgery table is always such a blow.

Butterscotch looked like he was loved up to the last moment.

Oh my gosh, I wasn't expecting that. I'm so sorry, how sad. He was much too young for such a short life. Tell you parents thank you for giving him love during that time.

My two year old cat died right after surgery and the vet felt terrible. He asked if he could do an autopsy and it revealed that he had a very malformed heart. What really shocked me was the vet didn't charge for the surgery! And it was on a weekend!!!
